World Gold Council Publications on Jewellery Technology

Gold Technology

Gold Technology magazine was focussed on gold jewellery manufacturing and materials technology and best practice. It was published 3 times per year in both English and Italian editions between 1990 and 2002. 36 issues were produced. It can be accessed on the WGC website. All back issues can be downloaded free.

Gold Technology ceased publication in 2002.

Gold Bulletin

Gold Bulletin is a scientific journal focused on the science, technology and applications of gold. It occasionally contains articles of interest on jewellery alloys and technology. See its website, www.goldbulletin.org  for archive of articles, downloadable free.

Technical Handbooks and Manuals

World Gold Council has published several Handbooks and Manuals on gold jewellery manufacturing technology. These are in English and some are available in Italian (as indicated below). Some local language editions (e.g. in Arabic) are available from WGC offices in some countries. Contact your local WGC office for details. Some translations in French, Russian and Chinese translations were also produced.

These Handbooks and Manuals were aimed at those with little formal training in jewellery technology and were designed to support the technical seminars programmes conducted in many countries around the world. They are available for download below:

1.Technical Manual for Gold Jewellery - A practical guide to gold jewellery manufacturing technology.

This is a basic manual, comprising 8 chapters on all aspects of jewellery technology. Each chapter is illustrated and contains references for further reading. It is a very useful training aid for new workers and supervisors.

Investment Casting

2.Investment Casting - a technical advisory manual for goldsmiths.

Written by Italian experts in casting, this 44 page manual, illustrated in colour, covers all stages of the investment casting ('Lost Wax') process, gives practical advice on best practice and contains a section on trouble-shooting.

Assaying and refining of gold

3. The Assaying and Refining of Gold - a guide for the gold jewellery producer.

This 30 page booklet describes the various analytical techniques for determining the gold content ('fineness') of jewellery and their limitations. It also describes the various processes for refining of gold-bearing materials and scraps and their limitations in terms of what metals are not removed during refining and so what may find its way back into your new jewellery production.

The Handbook is a mine of information on the common defects that can occur in jewellery production with emphasis on those occurring in casting. Written by a world expert on jewellery technology, Dieter Ott, it is presented as a series of actual Case Histories of defects. Each defect is fully described and well illustrated in colour, together with an explanation of its cause and recommendations for its prevention in future. Where appropriate, full metallographic investigation of the defect has been carried out and is described and illustrated.

It includes electropolishing, electroplating and other chemical techniques.

Seventh in the series of technical manuals and handbooks from World Gold Council, the Handbook on Investment Casting, written by Dr V.Faccenda , with a chapter on casting alloys by Dieter Ott (formerly of FEM, Germany), is a comprehensive book on the technology and manufacturing best practice on the most widely used process in jewellery manufacture (also known as the lost wax casting process). It is an update of the older Investment Casting Manual and complements the Handbook on Casting and other Defects.
