WGC funding new nanotech project

Friday, 3rd June 2005 (4371 views)

Solaris Nanosciences, a developer and manufacturer of nanomaterials, has said that the World Gold Council (WGC) will be providing funding, for the company to develop anisotropic gold nanorod technology for improved liquid-crystal displays (LCDs).

These nanorods are expected to improve display viewing-angle performance of televisions, mobile phones and cameras when incorporated into liquid crystals.

The use of gold in LCD systems is hoped to tackle the problem with current LCD technology that causes the image and colour to be degraded beyond certain viewing angles. Gold is used because it is non-toxic, inert, does not degrade in sunlight and has the optical parameters to create the required colours for visible display applications.

The current industrial demand for gold is between 350 tons and 400 tons a year, accounting for just ten per cent of global gold demand.

WGC industrial sector manager Dr Richard Holliday said: "Solaris Nanosciences has a powerful nanotechnology platform and an experienced team to successfully commercialise this technology. This will lead to exciting new applications for gold in electronic products."

The WGC has not disclosed the amount of money that they will be contributing to the research.track
