Researchers have revealed that they have developed a new method for controlling the rotation of nanowires.

In a move that is set to lead to tiny mixers, motors and other microscopic devices the researchers at Johns Hopkins University in the US used electrodes to create rotating electric fields that would spin the wires suspended in water.

The researchers have made videos of their efforts, in which they spin gold, platinum, nickel and carbon wires at precisely controlled rates, according to Phys Org.

Those rates could reach up to 1800 revolutions per minute, and the researchers have suggested that higher rotation rates are possible, but explained that their experimental equipment could not adequately measure such increases.

It is thought that the new technique will lead to a wide range of micro electromechanical (MEMS) machines in the future.
