Invitrogen gains nanocluster technology licence

Thursday, 13th October 2005 (4242 views)

Biotech company Invitrogen has signed an exclusive licence with Georgia Tech Research Corporation.

Under the agreement, Invitrogen will be provided with nanocluster technology, which will facilitate increased sensitivity in detection methods.

The new nanoclusters, which were developed by Robert Dickon and Jie Zhang, consist of a few gold or silver atoms that display interesting optical and physical properties.

These nanoclusters are up to ten times brighter than other semiconductor nanocrystals and are also extremely photostable. Their additional brightness will enable more detailed detection to be carried out, creating a new way forward in high-detection labelling.

Invitrogen has recently acquired the nanotechnology businesses of BioPixels, Quantam Dot and Biosource International.

It believes that these acquisitions, teamed with the licence, will enable it to continue as the market leader in organic chemistry-based labelling and detection technologies.
