Gold drives new DNA detection method

Thursday, 1st June 2006 (4677 views)

Gold nanoparticles have been used in a new process to identify DNA.

The process, which uses gold-capped nanoparticles in a sandwich assay, was able to detect as few as three million copies of any gene.

The research was carried out by the California State University in Los Angeles and the Chinese Academy of Sciences and published in the journal, Analytical Biochemistry.

An abstract from the journal said the detection levels were among the lowest among all gene analyses using surface plasmon resonance (SPR).

Improving the sensitivity of SPR could offer researchers an alternative to detection methods using fluorescent or radioactive probes.
