Recycle your electronic gold, say experts

Friday, 17th November 2006 (4116 views)

Routine household recycling should involve electronic equipment because of their high content of gold and copper, claims a leading association.

The Canadian-based Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) is urging consumers to consider alternatives to just dumping their old electronic goods and think of the potential reuse value, reports Canadian Press.

"These things are valuable learning tools and there is value inside of them as gold, copper, and aluminium and so on," said Bojan Paduh, managing director of ERA.

A large number of televisions, personal computers and mobile phones could help to benefit the environment by being recycled as well as preventing toxic substances being stored in landfills. ERA explained that a CRT monitor may contain high levels of phosphorus, cadmium, arsenic and around three kilograms of lead.

There are a growing number of non-profit organisations that recycle products as well as refurbishing old electronic equipment for use by charities and the growing value of gold could help to ensure their long-term success as well as cutting-down on landfill use.
