EPA urged to amend nanotechnology standpoint

Thursday, 24th May 2007 (2986 views)

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must attend to uncertainty that surrounds certain environmental concerns relating to nanotechnology, a new report has cited.

According to the report by ex-assistant administrator for policy, planning and evaluation at the EPA, Terry Davies, entitled EPA and Nanotechnology: Oversight for the 21st Century, a framework for best practice relating to nanotechnology has been discussed.

Nanotechnology is currently enjoying something of a honeymoon period as it continues to gather pace across the world as a technology that can provide benefits in a range of areas, including healthcare and solar cells to name but two.

David Rejeski, director of the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies at the Wilson Centre, insisted: "This new report seeks to encourage EPA, Congress, and others to create an intelligent oversight approach that empowers EPA and promotes investment and innovation in new nanotechnology products and processes."

A series of more than 25 steps have been recommended by Mr Davies in his report, to be implemented in order for nanotechnology to meet environmental and social standards.
