An agreement has been reached between specialty chemical manufacturer InterCrossIP Management, and Simon Fraser University to commercialise a thin film deposition technology platform which features gold.

The organisations reveal that the photochemical metal organic deposition (PMOD) technology has advantages in terms of printing and production of integrated circuits.

According to the groups, PMOD technology works by depositing thin layers of metals such as gold, metal oxides, and mixed-metal oxides.

There are several benefits to PMOD technology which the companies claim have not been previously achievable by other methods.

Benefits include the capability of patterning materials that cannot be etched, compatibility with plastic subtrates and the ability to pattern metal lines with ink jet printing.

Furthermore, it is claimed that there are a variety of applications for PMOD across the electronics spectrum, for instance the deposition of gold interconnect traces on a range of rigid and flexible substrates.
