Research team receives grant for gold nanoparticle study

Friday, 5th October 2007 (3000 views)

An associate professor at South Carolina State University has received a grant of more than $320,000 (£157,290) to fund research into biomedical applications using gold nanoparticles, particularly with regard to the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Dr Rahina Matab will use the funds, provided by the National Science Foundation in association with the South Carolina Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research & Institutional Development Awards, to promote hands-on resource training to women with minority backgrounds.

"The team of professors on this project are all women and we are all very interested in keeping women scientists in the professional pipeline by mentoring them at an early stage," said Dr Catherine Murphy, a collaborator on the research project.

Gold nanoparticle attributes will be used by the research team as it looks into the adhesion of the particles to molecules that are known to separate large protein groups in the human body, which is thought to be a potential cause of Alzheimer's disease.
