BBInternational sets standard for gold nanoparticles

Monday, 7th January 2008 (3649 views)

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States has named BBInternational's (BBI) gold nanoparticles as the reference standard for the medical industry, it has emerged.

The particles have been approved as the certified reference material for pre-clinical biomedical research and will be used by NIST to evaluate and qualify instrument performance and research.

BBI uses a proprietary manufacturing method to consistently produce mono disperse gold nanoparticles in pre-determined spherical sizes.

Lyn Rees, chief executive officer of the firm's diagnostics division, said the company is "delighted" with its NIST recognition status.

"Everything we do at BBI is governed by quality and this collaboration with NIST further supports the gold standard reputation that BBI gold has worked hard to achieve within the industry," he said.

In a related development, researchers in Taiwan may have identified a way to use gold nanoparticles to ease the pain caused by sensitive teeth, according to a nanotechnology journal.
