Company given licence for gold nanoparticle photosensitiser

Monday, 4th August 2008 (909 views)

A medical technology company has announced it has been given a licence for the therapeutic use of a gold nanoparticle photosensitiser.

Ondine Biopharma Corporation is a company which develops photodisinfection-based products.

According to the company, photodisinfection provides antimicrobial efficacy without incurring antibiotic resistance.

The nanoparticle photosensitiser is from UCL Business, part of University College London.

"In vitro studies have shown that this advanced compound is one of the most potent photodisinfection agents ever developed," stated Dr Nicolas Loebel, Ondine's chief technology officer.

In addition, the compound has tested well in killing MRSA and Dr Loebel said the company plans to develop it for integration into the photodisinfection system.

Ondine Biopharma is a company which is developing non-antibiotic therapies for viral, bacterial and fungal infections.

In March earlier this year, the organisation showcased its periowave photodisinfection system at the Pacific Dental Conference, held in Vancouver.

The system was developed to treat periodontal diseases.
