Gold nanoparticles used in breakthrough system

Tuesday, 2nd September 2008 (808 views)

A new reference system that may speed up the process of studying gold nanotechnology has been utilised by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Nist)

The Zetasizer method was used by Nist to classify ten, 30 and 60 nanometre gold spheres.

They are the first nanoparticles to be standardized in this way.

It is hoped the practice will provide data consistency across applications and methodologies used within nano-science, which is featured in medical research.

The breakthrough should lead to faster developments and approvals of new techniques.

The new reference materials were created in a joint effort with the National Cancer Institute's nanotechnology characterisation laboratory.

Gold has several uses in medicine - it can be prescribed as a weekly injection to treat inflammation of the joints and other rheumatic diseases, decreasing swelling, pain and stiffness according to the Arthritis Research Campaign.
