Thursday, 2nd October 2008 (686 views)

Editors from international journal Chemical Physics Letters have awarded a scientist involved in gold nanotechnology the Ahmed Zewail Prize in Molecular Sciences.

Professor Mostafa El-Sayed from the Georgia Institute of Technology was honoured for his contributions to the study if of electronic and molecular dynamics.

He will be presented with the award, along with $20,000 and a gold medal, during a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Salt Lake City in the spring of next year.

Ahmed Zewail - a Nobel laureate after which the award is named - said he was "overjoyed" that Mr El-Sayed has been recognised.

"Mostafa has made outstanding contributions in many areas of physical chemistry, bringing his creative ideas and insightful perspectives to molecular sciences," he added.

Mr El-Sayed was also a recent recipient of a US National Medal of Science, which was given to him by president George Bush at a ceremony at the White House.
