New nanotechnology book published

Friday, 3rd October 2008 (692 views)

A new book discussing the impact of nanotechnology has been published.

Several arguments surrounding the research of nanomaterials are outlined in Nanotechnology and the Environment, edited by Kate Sellers from global consulting firm Arcadis.

"Nanotechnology is as old as the medieval glass blowers and as new as today's headlines … [it] changes how we think about material science: gold particles appear purple and carbon can conduct electricity," remarked Ms Sellers.

She added that it is vital that more research into the potential of nanomaterials is conducted.

The book contains information on the environmental issues that are raised by nanotechnology, highlighting its usefulness for green projects, yet warning that scientists must pursue more data in order for them to fully understand its implications.

Recently, researchers from the University of Missouri created gold nanoparticles using a process that had no negative impact on the environment.

They achieved this by submerging gold salts into water and adding soybeans, which released the miniscule particles of gold.
