Environmentally-friendly gold nanoparticles hailed

Monday, 13th October 2008 (729 views)

A green method of producing gold nanoparticles has been hailed as "incredibly laudable".

GreenNano - a company that developed a way of creating the minute particles of gold without any toxic by-products - has generated a lot of interest in environmentally-friendly nanotechnology, reports green campaign site Global Warming is Real.

Researchers from the firm submerged gold salts in water and added soy beans, which produced gold nanoparticles in a natural process.

Kanesh Katti, a professor of radiology and physics at the University of Missouri, led the research.

The gold nanoparticles created by the method could go on to be used in a range of applications including cancer treatment, the news provider stated.

Nanospheres of gold recently featured in a study conducted by a team at Duke University.

They used the particles to produce a high-resolution imaging method that allowed them to "see" into living tissue, a development that could help with research into cancerous tumours.
