High school student studies gold nanoparticles at university level

Wednesday, 22nd October 2008 (690 views)

A high school student in the US has been given the chance to study gold nanoparticles thanks to an initiative launched by the University of Central Florida (UCF).

Austin Coye, a 15-year-old girl from Orlando, is taking part in a graduate-level physics research project at the institution as part of a scheme aimed at getting more youngsters interested in pursuing a career in science.

She is studying how gold nanoparticles act differently to normal gold when they are scaled down to a size of just a few nanometres.

Ms Coye will be able to showcase her work on a new blog that has been set up to publicise the project.

UCF assistant professor Enrique del Barco said: "She's amazing … she asks better questions than some of my college students. We're definitely going to support her and cultivate her talent."

The scheme has been funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant.

This federal agency's mission is to support all disciplines of science and engineering.
